What We Believe

Salisbury Baptist Church was formed in 1655, with some of our earliest members practising a Baptist form of worship in the City as far back as 1620. Church members at that time were part of the first generation of Baptists in England and several from Salisbury attended the first Baptist Conference in Amsterdam in 1609.

“The Church was formed in the stormy religious period of the Reformation and the rise of the Free Churches. We hear the clink of the armour of Cromwell’s Ironsides and the determined tramping of our forefathers over the Wiltshire Downs. We perceive that the great tradition in which we now stand began in glowing spiritual experience, deep conviction and unswerving loyalty to the Bible.”  Ernest Truckle: A History of Salisbury Baptist Church, 1955.

We still hold that strong evangelical tradition within a spirit of love and openness to all who seek our fellowship. We are an active member of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and we

adhere to the same basis of faith as our fellow Baptist Churches, which is:

That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to

faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His Laws.

That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of those who have

professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who “died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again the third day”.

That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of

the world.

Further details of our Baptist beliefs may be found at the Baptist Union website on What makes a Baptist? We participate in the life of our local Baptist Association – Southern Counties Baptist Association – and provide support to the work of other Baptist churches in the Southern Counties area through the Baptist Home Mission

In common with many other Baptist Churches, we are members of the Evangelical Alliance and subscribe to it’s Basis of Faith
